Grand Arsenale - Old Venetian Harbour

View Chania (Airport, Harbour) in a larger map

The conference will take place at Grand Arsenale ("neorio" or shipyard), one of Chania's historical buildings, located in the city's old Venetian Harbour. Grand Arsenale is the last in a group of 17 venetian shipyards ("neoria"), 7 of which are rescued in nowadays. They were all founded in the late 15th century when Venice decided to build them for maintance and readiness of the venetian fleet.

With open sea front for the approach of ships and sheds with arched pediment to crown the sides, the building had a length of about 50 meters, width 9 meters and average height of 10 meters. By adding the second floor in 1872 began a new era for the Grand Arsenale, who hosted many important public services: schools of Christian Community in 1872, housing theatrical performances in the great room from 1892, local hospital from 1923 , town hall from 1928 to 1941. The monument was ruined before its restoration in 2002 to its present impressive architectural shape. Today is one of the most celebrated venetian monuments in Chania hosting the Center of Mediterranean Architecture as well as several important exhibitions and events.
