In memory of Professor Emeritus
Theodore S. Papatheodorou

Announcement : "T.S. Papatheodorou" Young Researcher Awards

The 2014 T.S. Papatheodorou Award Committee is pleased to announce that the winners of the T.S. Papatheodorou Young Researcher Awards based on papers submitted and presented during the NUMAN 2014 conference are the following:

  • The prize for Numerical Analysis: Theory, Methods and Applications, to be equally shared by Anthony Ashton of Cambridge University for his paper "Functional Analytic Framework of the Fokas Method for Elliptic Boundary Value Problems" and Gulcin Mihriye Muslu of Istanbul Technical University, for her paper "A Fourier pseudospectral method for the nonlocal nonlinear wave equation" coauthored with Handan Borluk.

  • The prize for High Performance Scientific Computing to be awarded to Nikolaos D. Vilanakis of Technical University of Crete for his paper "Solving Discontinuous Collocation equations for a class of brain tumor models on GPUs" coauthored with Ioannis E. Athanasakis.

The prizes are awarded to honor the memory of Professor Theodore Papatheodorou, and eligible were PhD candidates and Postdocs (up to 7 years after PhD commencement) who had entered their candidacy for the award and had submitted and presented papers during the NUMAN 2014 conference, held in September 2014 in Chania, Greece.

The Committee would like to congratulate these authors for their outstanding contributions.

The Committee also distinguished two more researchers that were runners up for the best paper prize in Numerical Analysis and decided to honor them with a congratulatory letter.

These researchers were:
Drosos Kourounis of the Universita della Svizzera Italiana, for his paper "Constraint handling for gradient-based optimization of compositional reservoir flow and Kevin Crooks of Cambridge University, for his paper, "Two numerical implementations of the Fokas method for elliptic equations in a polygon".

The Committee would like to thank the winners as well as all the authors who entered the competition for their papers and presentations that honor in the best possible manner the loving memory of Theodore Papatheodorou. The Committee is also grateful to the University of Patras and to the Computer Technology Institute and Publications "Diophantus" for supporting these awards.

We are organizing the 6th International Conference on Numerical Analysis "NumAn2014 - Recent Approaches to Numerical Analysis: Theory, Methods and Applications". The conference will take place at the old venetian harbour of Chania on the island of Crete, Greece, on September 2-5, 2014.

The themes of the conference are in the broad area of numerical analysis and applications, including:

  • numerical methods, algorithms and software
  • numerical and scientific computing
  • numerical methods and computational modelling in Science and Engineering
  • parallel and high-performance numerical computation

All areas of numerical analysis are considered, including:

  • numerical linear algebra
  • numerical solution of ordinary, partial and stochastic differential equations
  • numerical solution of integral equations
  • nonlinear and optimization problems

The aims of the conference are:

  • to bring together and bequeath scientific activities, directions and pursuits of scientists on subjects that pertain to the conference,
  • to foster an exchange of views and ideas,
  • to study the theoretical background required for methods, algorithms and techniques used in applications,
  • to search directions of theoretical results towards applications,
  • to highlight open problems and future directions of numerical analysis

Several Workshops will be organized to highlight current mathematical, numerical, computational and technological trends in areas of high scientific interest, including:

  • Mathematical Biology and Medicine
  • Environmental Science and Engineering
  • Multiphysics / Multidomain Problems

We invite interested researchers to submit one-page abstracts, for lecture or poster presentations, on topics pertaining to the themes of the conference and the workshops by Sunday, June 15, 2014 (final deadline). Abstracts have to be in LaTeX format, following the sample file sample.tex, and e-mailed to

See the important dates for the deadlines of the conference.

APNUM Special Issue:
(NEW!) The submission deadline has been extended to February 15, 2015.

Full papers presented at the Conference may be submitted for publication in a Special Issue of Applied Numerical Mathematics. Details for paper submission to this special issue are posted at the Special Issue page.
